This Week’s Activity
Employers have sent more than 300 letters to the Department of Labor through the coalition’s portal since the coalition partners launched the grassroots effort to request an extension of the comment period. Thank you to those of you who took action. At the same time, a very small fraction of comments have been received urging the Department to keep the current September 4 deadline.
As we continue to gather data and feedback for our comprehensive set of comments, you can already submit your own overtime comment letter. As promised, here is a link to model comments for you to use in drafting your own. Kevin Settles, National Restaurant Association board member and President/CEO of Bardenay Restaurants & Distilleries, filed comments provide an excellent example of effective comments that you may also find helpful.
In just one page, Kevin is able to summarize the negative impact that the expected changes would have on his restaurant and its employees. I am glad that he is allowing me to share this with you. Only you can give specific personal examples on how the proposed regulations would negatively impact your employees. A collection of one pagers of personal stories could do more to turn this around than a legal dissertation from your favorite trade association.
The coalition also has a Lobbying Committee that has already conducted numerous meetings, with many more scheduled in the coming weeks, with key offices. Here is language you can use to contact your elected officials and ask them to support our efforts. Finally, while our coalition’s “Take Action” tab is still calling for a 60 days extension, we are working to have an additional restaurant specific web portal ready by next week for you to submit comments easily and directly to the Department of Labor.
