The National Restaurant Association and our Educational Foundation applauded President Trump's new Executive Order on the expansion of apprenticeships.
The President signed the Executive Order during a ceremony at the White House Thursday.
National Restaurant Association policy experts provided the President and his Administration with feedback to improve the Department of Labor’s apprenticeship program prior to its signing.
The Executive Order will:
- Streamline the administrative process by shifting certification from the DOL to industry.
- Better position restaurants and other businesses to set their own standards to train future employees.
- Double the funding of apprenticeship programs, which would help more Americans establish successful careers.
- Expand access and encourage apprenticeships in colleges, high schools and other entities.
Industry a vocal advocate of the Executive Order
Dawn Sweeney, our president and CEO, said the restaurant industry fully supports President Trump’s Executive Order, and thanked him and Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta for their commitment to ensuring the success of apprenticeship programs.
“With today’s Executive Order, we will have even more opportunities to help employees in the hospitality industry move up the ladder for fulfilling and rewarding careers,” she said.
The order is expected to not only help expand our domestic workforce, but also make it easier for restaurants to find and employ well-trained and qualified workers. According to our recent research, employee recruitment and retention are among restaurant operators’ top concerns today. The research also states that nine in 10 managers and eight in 10 restaurant owners started their careers as entry-level employees.
You’re hired: Our innovative programs benefit apprentices
As we explore more ways to train the industry’s future workforce, we’ve been heavily engaged in working on innovative apprenticeship programs as well as mentorship and educational partnerships, such as our Educational Foundation's ProStart program.
The DOL last year awarded the NRAEF a $1.8 million grant to create our industry's first-ever joint apprenticeship program with the American Hotel & Lodging Association. Officially launched last February, the program aims to develop the next generation of restaurant and hospitality employees into successful managers and executives.
Rob Gifford, the NRAEF's executive vice president, said he is excited about the future of our apprenticeship program, and added that it "provides the skills and training needed for career advancement across multiple management positions."
