As a founding partner of Dine Out for No Kid Hungry, we encourage restaurants to get involved in Share Our Strength's annual campaign to help end childhood hunger. Restaurants have raised $37 million since 2008 for Dine Out for No Kid Hungry, the largest restaurant-led initiative to fight childhood hunger.
This year, nearly 15,000 family-owned operations, fast food empires, fine-dining destinations and neighborhood gathering places are participating. For every $1 donated, No Kid Hungry can feed a child 10 meals.
Here are a few things you might not know about the campaign that aims to ensure every child has a healthful meal every day:
1. You can participate whenever you want.
Most restaurants offer Dine Out for No Kid Hungry promotions in September, the traditional month for the campaign. But No Kid Hungry is a year-round effort to fight childhood hunger. That means your restaurant can encourage guests to Dine Out for No Kid Hungry in May, as Shake Shack does, or all summer long, like IHOP. Corner Bakery, pictured above, participates in September. 2. There is no minimum contribution.
Your contribution is based on what you raise through bounceback coupons, sales of a specific menu item, etc. Most restaurants offer bouncebacks, such as a coupon for a free appetizer or dessert in exchange for a small donation. Orange Leaf employees in Stillwater, Okla., show their enthusiasm for the 300-location company's Dine Out promotions, which has included bouncebacks and t-shirt and tumbler sales.
3. Dine Out is about the generosity of your guests.
Your success depends on guest loyalty and the enthusiasm of your team members. Share Our Strength offers resources to help your employees understand childhood hunger and explain it to your guests. Tulsa, Okla.-based Mazzio's uses Dine Out for No Kid Hungry Rally Kits to generage excitement among staff, including the Coweta, Okla., team.
