Atlanta Q3 2019 restaurant sales volume increased 1.97% vs. Q3 2018. For the quarter ended September 2019 positive sales trends were reported at 64% of the 98 independent Atlanta restaurants surveyed. Year-to-date 2019 sales were up 3.57% over 2018 while 70% of restaurants reported positive year-to-date sales.
In its survey of national restaurant sales TDn2K’s Black Box Intelligence, a restaurant sales and traffic-tracking company, reported national restaurant Q3 2019 revenues decreased by -.42%. This is the first time in two years that Q3 has produced negative sales growth. TDn2K reported that the Southeastern United States had the strongest sales out of the eleven regional segments tracked for the third quarter with an increase of 1.51%. Nationally restaurant traffic continued its downward trend declining -3.53% in Q3.

The Metro Atlanta economy continues to show signs of growth. The Atlanta Convention and Visitor Bureau noted events in the metro area during Q3 were the Primerica financial conference in June bringing 50,000 visitors and September’s Dragon Con convention which broke attendance records with 85,000+ attendees.
Carl Muth of FoodService Resource Associates LLC who tracks restaurant activity in Georgia estimates that 510 new restaurants opened in Metro Atlanta to date in 2019. Metro Atlanta continues to see a decline in unemployment. The unemployment rate fell to 2.9% in September 2019 from 3.4% in September 2018. During the twelve-month period ended August 2019 the food services and drinking places industry subsector added 11,600 jobs. Nationwide employment in the leisure and hospitality industry increased 1.8% versus 4.8% in Atlanta over the prior year.”
The Sample: The 98 non-franchise restaurants were drawn from the metro Atlanta market. Total survey sales volume was $245 million for year-to-date 2019. The survey includes restaurants in Atlanta’s fast-casual, casual and fine-dining segments open at least 21 months.
